In 2001, Doug founded <a href="http://electionline.org">electionline.org</a>, which is still the nation’s leading nonpartisan source for election policy news and information. He was a frequent speaker and commentator on election matters, including for the New York Times, Governing Magazine and National Public Radio.He has been an attorney in private practice specializing in election and ethics law and served as elections counsel to the Democrats on the U.S. Senate Rules Committee. Doug holds a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center, a Master’s in Public Administration from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and a Bachelor’s degree in Politics and Russian Studies from Princeton University. He is widowed with three adult children and lives in beautiful Hanover, MN.

The White House's "BIG" budget bill also slashed funding to social services and imposed strict rules (like work requirements). I will fight to reverse Medicare and Medicaid cuts - and not just restore the lost funding but ensure that these programs are fully funded in order to keep the promises we have made to one another as Americans.

The Boundary Waters are nothing less than sacred. We do not need or want them to be exploited for mining or other purposes - and certainly not when it benefits foreign companies and foreign markets. I will be a NO on any proposal to remove protections for the BWCA.

Town Hall #6

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has done massive damage to modern medicine with its bizarre policies along with devastating cuts to research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). I will fight to impeach HHS Secretary RFK, Jr., clean house of anti-vax and anti-science officials, and revive America's long tradition of leading the world in medical research and innovation.

This country cannot be free if all people aren't free to be who they are, love who they love, or marry and start a family without government interference. Congress should "mind its own damn business."

Town Hall #4 - St. Cloud

The federal invasion of Minnesota is an outrage. The reign of terror - and literally, death - must stop NOW. I support efforts to withhold ICE funding, even if it means a shutdown, to force ICE out Minnesota - and in Congress will seek to dismantle ICE so this never happens again.

Reproductive health care decisions are purely a matter between a woman and her medical providers. I support full reproductive rights.

Minnesota has a long tradition of responsible gun ownership by citizens who purchase and lawfully carry them for hunting or self-protection - and I will defend that right. But assault-style weapons are different; they are mass killing machines - and I will fight to keep them off of our streets.

Guns and the 2nd Amendment

The Boundary Waters are sacred to Minnesotans and a priceless environmental resource. I am 100% opposed to any mining or other resource extraction in the BWCA or its watershed. PERIOD.

We cannot continue with a health care system that is controlled by for-profit insurance companies instead of patients and providers. I will fight for new policies like "Medicare for All" or a public option so that people can get the care they need without fear of going broke.

Climate change is real - and the United States is a major part of the problem. I will fight to get the US back into the Paris Accords and to work with the world community to slow global warming - including weaning ourselves from fossil fuels - before disaster strikes.

Many Americans don't know that the taxes they pay into Social Security ("FICA" on your pay stub) are capped at incomes over $184,500. I will fight to eliminate the cap on Social Security taxes in order to ensure that wealthy taxpayers are fully contributing to cost of Americans' retirement.

America is a nation of immigrants - and we need immigration laws that establish clear rules as well as a straightforward and clear path to citizenship. I will fight for common-sense reform that works for immigrants and employers alike and reduces the time, cost and red tape associated with becoming an American.
